작가 노트
I sometimes observe others to truly understand myself.
In this work, they have the name ‘family’, but they are also ‘others who could not understand’ until the end.

A family was observed from an objective and dry point of view; writes a short story, and plans exhibition based on it. There are five characters in the novel: three parents A, B, Y, their son C and narrator I.
Since the study of a human being is a direct or indirect study of not only the person but also the history to which he belongs. Over time, the history of the Korean Peninsula appears from the Japanese colonial period to the present.
This short novel, which is the root of the exhibition, tells the story of one family; but in fact, the word family is not important. This is not a story about family. It is a story about humans in the family. I observe the members not as a person of certain group, not as a person who someone’s father or mother, but as the subject of their life with an ego. And I want to talk about their relationships. 

Human nature and their truth are uncomfortable because they are raw. It is implied to someone looking into them.

작가는 때로, 자신을 진실로 이해하기 위해 타인을 관찰한다.
이번 작업에서 그들은 '가족'이란 이름을 가졌으나, 마지막까지 '이해할 수는 없었던 타인들’이기도 하다.

작가는, 한 가족을 객관적이고 건조한 시점으로 관찰하고, 그것을 바탕으로 글을 쓰고, 전시를 기획하였다. 소설에는 세 명의 부모 A, B, Y, 그들의 아들 C, 그리고 화자 I, 이렇게 다섯의 캐릭터가 등장한다.
인간을 탐구하는 것은 그 사람 뿐 아니라, 그가 속한 역사까지를 직, 간접적으로 연구하는 것이므로, 시간의 흐름에 따라 한반도의 역사가 일제강점기부터 현대를 아울러 나타난다.

전시의 뿌리가 되는 작가의 소설은 한 가족의 이야기를 하고 있지만, 사실 이 작업에서 가족이란 단어 자체는 중요치 않다. 이것은 가족에 대한 이야기가 아니다. 가족을 이루는 ‘인간’에 대한 이야기이다. 한 집단의 구성원으로서의 개인이 아닌 - 즉, 누군가의 아버지, 어머니로서의 인간이 아닌 - 자아를 가진 그들 인생의 주체로서 관찰한다. 그리고 개인 간의 관계를 보여 준다.

인간의 본성과 그들의 진실은, 날 것이라 불편하다. 그것을 들여다보는 심정 또한 그렇다.

2. 각자의 방 Their Rooms

그들 각자의 방은, 각 캐릭터들의 마음 속 깊은 곳을 나타낸다. 그들의 방에는, 그림과 생명체가 하나씩 자리하고 있다. 이것들을 관찰하다보면, 각 인물들의 이야기가 보일 것이다. Each room represents each character's deep inside. While closely observing objects in the room, we would understand their stories.

Her only sin was that she was a woman. She was like a scentless Flower having deep Roots. 그녀는 모든 것을 다 가지고 태어난 여인 같았다. 그러나 오직 하나. 그녀는 남자가 아니었다. 그녀는 <여자라는 것이 그저 '죄'인 인물>이었다.

He was a pacifist and bystander. He looked like sitting alone under the shade of a Jujube Tree in his hometown. 그는 조용하면 평화롭다고 생각하는 사람이다. 조용하기만 하다면, 무슨 일이 일어나도 상관없던 그를, ​<평화주의적 방관자>라 부르자.

She wallowed in self pity; she couldn't considerate of others. She was like a small red Bird in a Cage. 그녀는 스스로가 너무나 불쌍해서 견딜 수가 없었다. 그녀는, <자기 연민이 너무 커, 타인을 배려할 수 없는 사람>이었다. ​​

He trusted no one, except himself. He was like a Fish in a small Jar. I는 C를 보며 생각한다. 그가 선한 인품을 타고 난것이 얼마나 대견한 일인지... 그는 <자신을 제외한 누구도 믿지 못하는 아이>로 자라났지만, 타인에게는 한 없이 관대한 사람이다. ​​

She 'chose' to be lonely like other people living these days. She was like a snail carrying its own shelter to hide from others whenever she wants. 몸과 마음, 숨을 곳을 짊어지고 다니는 달팽이는, 작가 자신을 대변한다. 그는 시대의 사람들처럼, 차라리 <외로움을 선택한 사람>이다.

3. 그들의 집 Their House

이상하고 아름다운, 파란 대문 집 House with a Blue Door

​소설의 주인공인 B, A, Y, C의 공동생활 장소인 집은, 그 건물로서의 가치보다, 가정을 통합한다는 것에, 더 큰 의미를 지니고 있다. 그들 B(꽃), A(열매 나무), Y(새), C(물고기)가 한데 뒤섞여, '자칫' 아름다워 보일 수 있는 이 가정은, 사실, 각자의 아픈 사정들을 지니고 있을지도 모를 일이다. 저 파란 문을 열고 들어가면, 주인공들의 이야기를 들을 수 있다. 작업은 회화와 '5장의 노트'로 구성되어 있다. 작업의 제목인 '집과 그물'은 모두, 그 안에 생명체를 가두는 역할을 한다. 개인에게 가족의 의미란 무엇일까?

There's more here than meets the eye. Sometimes, beautiful silence brings deep and dark nights.

​작가는, '신(神)에 대한 개인의 의견이, 그의 철학과 닿아있다'고 믿는다. 하기는, 소설의 등장인물인 B, A, Y, C, I의, 신에 대한 생각들이다.

​B는 신을 믿었다. B was a religious woman. 현실이 전부인 것이 너무나 허무하고 두려운 그녀는, 내세를 믿었다. 그것이 그녀를 살아가게 했다.
A는 신에 관심이 없었다. A didn't care about God. 사실, 있어도, 없어도 그만이었다. 그는 잘못한 것이 없으니 당당히 살았다. 진실로, 그리 믿고 살았다.
Y는 신을 믿어야 했다. Y had to believe in God. 그녀는 자신의 선하지 않음을 알고 있었다. 자신의 회개를 들어주고, 죄를 사하여 줄 것은, 무엇이라도 믿어야만 했다. ​
C는 신도 사람도 믿지 않았다. C never believed in anyone. 그는 피로 묶인 관계가 얼마나 덧없는 것인지 잘 알았고, 주체의 의지와 상관없이 존재하게 하고는, 내팽개쳤다는 면에서, 신도 그들과 별반 다르지 않다고 생각했다. 
I는 신이 있으면 좋겠다고 생각했다. I wished that God is here. 그는 인간이 만든 신이 아닌, 진정한 의미의 절륜(絕倫)한 신이 존재하기를 바랐다.

4. C의 바다, Y의 하늘 - Sea for C, Sky for Y

​C와 Y는 평생을 바쳐, 열과 성을 다해, 있는 힘껏 싸웠다. 결국 그들은 같은 곳으로 나아가는 줄도 모르고, 서로 상처주는 사람들이었을지 모르겠다. 
​All his life, C fought with Y. They did their best to hurt each other. Maybe this is because they were the same kind of people.

​5. 관계의 진화 - The Evolution of Relationships

​관계라는 것은 마치 생물과 같아서, 움직이고 사고하며, 진화 혹은 퇴화하는 듯 보인다. 여기에서 이야기하는 '진화'는, 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화한다는 뜻으로, 꼭 발전된 관계만을 뜻하지 않는다. 작업은 프레임 안에서 출발한 관계들이, 그 '밖으로 이동하는 모습의 찰나'를 담은 것이다. 작가의 시각에서, 점은 개인이고, 그 점을 이은 도형들은 그들의 관계를 나타낸다. 그러니 작업은 네 명의 개인들이 가지는 관계를 보여주고 있다. 그 관계의 끝이 퇴보가 될지, 발전이 될지는, 관계를 구성하는 개인들의 몫이겠다.
Relationships look like living creatures. They think, move, evolve and degenerate, just like the quadrangle moving out of the frame.

6. 사각의 관계 - Relationships of Quadrangles

커다란 캔버스라는 사각형 안에, 점과 같이 작은 사각형들이 정연히 놓여있고, 그 위에 각기 다른 도형들이 다시 자리 잡았다. 작가의 시각에서, 점이 개인이고, 점을 이은 도형들이 그들의 관계를 나타낸다면, 이 작업은, 인간들이 가지는 다양하고 무수한 관계들을 보여 주고 있다. 
​These works consist of lots of layers including small and big quadrangles. It shows our various and countless relationships.
​
작가의 글 <그들을 잃어가는 이야기>에서는, 4명의 개인이 모여 한 가정을 이룬다. 작가에게 이것은 마치, 4개의 독립된 점들이 모여 하나의 사각형을 이루는 듯한 형상이었고, 이후 그의 작업에서 도형은, 그 점의 개수와 상관없이 '무리', 즉 '인간들의 관계'를 나타낸다. 작가는 이야기한다. 그 관계가 행복일지 불행일지는 그 속을 들여다보아야만 한다고.

모든 작업은, 그 자체로 완성체이나, 그것을 설치작업의 부분으로 활용하기도 한다. 이것은 마치, 개인은 독립된 인격체이나, 그들이 모여 가정을 이루면, 또 다른 어떤 것이 되는 것과 같은 이치이겠다.

​​점들이 도형이 되고, 개인이 단체에 속한다는 것은, 어떠한 프레임을 갖는다는 것과 같다. 그것은 소속감을 통한 평안을 주지만, 동시에 꽤! 무겁기도 하다. 또, 보이지 않는 선들은 개인을 이어 도형을 만들어낸다. 또한, 태어나면서부터 부모라는 관계를 받아 나온 인간들은, 태어나면서 사각이라는 도형을 가지고 나온 캔버스와 닮아있기도 하다.
​
​Dots become a figure; and, individuals belong to a group. A sense of belonging gives you peace; but, at the same time, it is way to heavy! Invisible lines make relationships.​

Artist's Statement
Sometimes, we observe others to truly understand ourselves. In this project, the others have a name 'family', but they're also the people we could not understand to the end. Jung Jean studied a family with a dry and objective point of view. He wrote a short story about them, did art works based on it, and planned this exhibition. In his story, there are five characters  - I(narrator), C(her father) and A, B, Y(her grand-parents). Studying certain people means observing not only individuals, but the periods in their life; hence, the history of the Korean Peninsula appears from the Japanese occupation period(1910~1945) to the present day in chronological order.
​
The short story - which is the root of his art works - talks about a family; however, in fact, the word 'family' itself is not that important. This is because it is about the stories of family 'members'. Jung is trying to study each member as a person having an ego - the subject of one's life - not as a father, mother, son, or daughter. And then, he shows their relationships.

In the exhibition, there are family's house and their rooms. The house is a public space and each room is a private space reflecting each characters' unconsciousness. In a room, there are a painting on the wall and a living creature on a table. The painting and the creature mean their utopia and internal personality. In the two kinds of places - the house and the rooms, Jung shows the truth of human nature; and, in front of the uncomfortable and raw thing, he gives us an opportunity to ponder about ourselves and our environments called family or others.
