Artist's Statement

[  Strata* and Teum** - Order and Absence  ]

*Strata = order, layer
**Teum = a space of absence as gap, crack, void… and myself

The layers of knitting resemble geological strata, yet they are also layers of time. The accumulation of time is no different from the accumulation of life; it inevitably includes imperfection. For the artist, knitting is the act of weaving thread (presence) to create Teum (a space of absence). Just as there are many forms of presence, there are many forms of absence. Here, Teum is not simply the opposite of presence—it is a protagonist in its own right. Presence (thread) and absence (Teum) come together to create order. That order accumulates like geological strata within the woven structure. In the exhibition space, it transforms, collapses, regenerates, and is recorded.
What is often dismissed as emptiness or absence is, in fact, the physical and psychological space that allows presence to exist. The same is true of people, and of the societies they create.

1)Strata
Strata are the orders of nature and humanity, the layers of time. Though invisible, they undeniably exist, always carrying the possibility of being overturned. Strata are, in essence, built upon agreements. Countless agreements—large and small—interact to constitute the world. As strata are emerge from Teum and grows with it, Teum inevitably remains within every stratum. Strata and Teum continuously transform one another, and through this movement the world exists as an ever-unfolding process. What we call the world is an ongoing act of creating harmony. Completion does not exist.

If strata are presence, the Teum is both the beginning of absence and the prelude to a new form of presence yet to emerge. Teum is the seed of conflict, capable of causing deviation and overturning established orders. Sometimes, the distinction between subject and object becomes blurred. This is paradoxical, but the artist believes this ambiguity is close to human nature. Every existence possesses its own order like rhythm or flow. Through careful observation, one can discover Teum in it. This physical, emotional, or conceptual boundary becomes the essential condition for transforming existing strata. The artist contemplates Teum, senses it, and explores its meanings. The world remains forever unfinished—not because it lacks completion, but because Teum within every stratum continually sets change into motion.

2)Teum
Teum is not a fixed form or a specific location, but a shared principle that appears across different phenomena.
(1)Physical Teum, Crack: The moment when an order breaks. It is no longer complete.
(2)Spatial Teum, Passage: A crack becomes a path of movement. Things depart and return.
(3)Conceptual Teum, Creation: The origin of every beginning. It opens the way to new possibilities.
(4)Existential Teum, Self: The self within the world.
In Korean, Teum carries multiple meanings: 1)a gap or opening, 2)the space between people,  3)an opportunity, 4)emotional distance, 5)room to breathe, 6)a weakness and more. As a physical, emotional, and conceptual space, Teum is a crack, a flaw, and a breathing space. It is also the artist's self.

There was a time when I thought of myself as a small Teum happened to be created by this world. Teum, a place where something has opened, leaving a space in between. Human life, at least in part, is to prove the value of one’s own existence. With that desire, I began to study Teum hoping to understand myself through it. This body of work explores the value and potential of that small Teum represented by 'myself'. In a world that looks like seamless and smooth, the slightest unseen crack is easily dismissed as a flaw. But is Teum (myself) necessarily a flaw? What can such a small Teum do within this immense world? Through my artworks, I seek to reflect on the existential and creative possibilities.

If viewers recognize echoes of Korean traditional painting or read Daoism in my work, that would be reflections of my unconscious. They were never consciously intended, yet the work naturally finds its way there.

[  Materiality of the Artwork: Knitting and Painting  ]

(1) Knitting
Within the order created by what is present (yarn), absence is created as gaps. The world of knitting can exist only through the coexistence of presence and absence.
(2) Painting
Oil and acrylic, materials with opposing properties, dry by creating cracks. Once dry, however, they coexist in harmony on a single canvas.

Across both knitting and painting, Teum (gap, void) fulfills its role precisely by remaining empty. Teum is not a background or absence; it is also a protagonist.
