The Study of Height, Depth, and Flow
- The fundamentally Subjective Study of the order of Matter and Human Nature
I believe that the most fundamental order of the world is
expressed through Height, Depth, and Flow.
It governs not only physical properties of objects
but also the emotional and mental characteristics of human beings.
The essence of this research lies in what I call the promise -
an interaction between all living things, including humans,
and even inorganic substances.
This promise is the order itself.
It moves both matter and emotion,
making the world’s processes visible and tangible.
Order creates gaps.
A gap may represent relationships, distances in space or time,
or even the invisible energy between things.
These gaps imply distance -
The constant push and pull between forces.
Between materials, this distance is is every-shifting yet maintained,
like the movement of planets in the universe
or the orbits of atoms in matter.
Between human beings, distance preserves individuality.
Yet, it is also the source of conflict and anxiety.
Distance includes height.
Being high only exists because there is being low.
This is not merely about status, power, or hierarchy.
It points to something far more primitive -
a basic instinct, perhaps even something more fundamental.
The world, as a process of order and harmony,
physically manifests itself through Height, Depth, and Flow.
The mental and emotional aspects of humans are not so different.
We create our own values and live by them.
Some devote their lives to constantly reaching for height,
some for endless freedom, and some for depth.
Yet, it is difficult to accept what is different from ourselves.
We know we ought to embrace these differences -
but it is never easy.
As territorial beings, we long to remain eternal within our own realms.
However, the world is a collection of the different and the diverse.
Complete isolation is impossible.
Thus, conflict is inevitable.
It is ironic, for we call ourselves social animals.
Yet, in this world, there is no final result.
What we call the world is nothing more than the ongoing process
This is why there can never be a ‘completed’ person.
The principle of the physical world,
of human beings, and of human-made societies
do not seem so different after all.
Orders continuously shape both matter and humanity.
I study and work with
the physical properties of the world and the nature of humans.
And so, quite naturally,
this becomes a story about the world - and about ourselves.

- 물질의 질서와 인간의 본성에 대한, 지극히 개인적인 연구
작가가 생각하는 세상의 질서, 그 가장 기본 원칙은 <높고 낮음, 흐름, 깊고 얕음>이다. 이것은 물건의 물리적 성질과 인간의 정서적 특성을 포함한다. 연구의 내용은 존재물, 즉 인간을 포함한 모든 유기체와 무기체를 상호작용하게 하는 약속에 관한 것이다. 약속은 질서로, 물질과 정서를 움직이게 한다. 질서는 사이를 만드는데, 사이는 서로 맺은 관계를 뜻하기도 하고 한 곳에서 다른 곳까지의 공간이나 시간을 뜻하기도 한다. 사이에는 거리가 존재하며, 그것은 당기는 힘과 밀어내는 힘의 균형이다. 예를 들어, 물건 사이의 거리는 우주 안의 행성들이나 물건 안의 원자들처럼 끊임없이 움직이며 유지되는 거리를 만든다. 이것은 마치 망원경과 현미경을 동시에 들여다보는 듯한 착각을 불러일으킨다. 사람 사이의 거리는 서로의 차이를 만드는 거리를 뜻한다. 인간은, 자신과 타인뿐만 아니라 스스로와도 내외하니 내 안에서도 밖에서도 사이가 생기고 고민과 갈등으로 발현된다.
이렇듯 세상은, 질서와 조화의 과정으로써 <높고 낮음, 흐름, 깊고 얕음>을 물리적으로 내보인다. 우리가 눈으로 보는 세상은 명료하지만 그것에 대한 우리의 이해도는 불투명하다. 인간의 정신적, 정서적 부분 또한 물질의 질서와 다르지 않다. 각자의 가치관을 만들고 그것에 따라 움직인다. 누군가는 끊임없이 높으려고, 누군가는 자유로이 흐르려고, 누군가는 한없이 깊으려고 평생을 바친다.
인간과 인간을 휘감은 우주 안에서, 질서는 과정을 가시적으로 내보인다. 결과는 없다. 조화를 만들어가는 과정을 우리는 세상이라 부른다. 사람도 그렇다. 완성된 사람이 존재하지 않는 이유이다.
세상을 이루는 근본인 <높고 낮음, 흐름, 깊고 얕음>은 물질과 인간에 적용된다. ‘물리적 세상과, 인간과, 인간이 만든 사회’의 원리가 달라 보이지 않는다. 물리적 성질과 인간의 특성, 그들의 질서. 이것은 자연스럽게 세상과 나, 우리에 대한 이야기이다.
